Back to school! Hundreds of NYC school children will start the new school year in French!
French School Programs in public schools of New York:
In total, nearly 700 students will follow one of the French programs in New York this year and projections for 2009-2010 exceed 1,000 students. School programs take several forms: dual-language classes, after-school classes, heritage classes, preparations for GED. Read the report: English [pdf] | Français [pdf]

Crossing the Line: FIAF Fall Festival 2008
September 16 to October 5, 2008

Crossing the Line, FIAF's annual fall festival, presents inter-disciplinary contemporary works (film, theater, performance art...) by artists who are transforming cultural practices on both sides of the Atlantic. Sub-titled Transfiguring Cultures, the festival aims not only to present critical new artistic practices from the rapidly shifting cultural landscapes of Europe and North America but also to transgress the established notions of culture in France and New York. The first commission is a new work by the jazz trio The Bad Plus, which will be based on a song by French icon Serge Gainsbourg and performed in concert at FIAF on September 20.

The Great Explorers Student Contest
September to November 2008
The French Embassy and the Québec Government Office in New York, in partnership with the American Association of Teachers of French host a series of school contests to celebrate Quebec's 400th anniversary and to honor the famous French explorers of North America as Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain and La Salle. All tri-state students from grade K to 8 are eligible to participate. 50 winners will be chosen and great prizes will be offered: the first super-winner will win a trip to Quebec! And the following 4 winners will receive a scholarship valued at $500 each. The contest will be launched on September 1. more | flyer [pdf]

Student contest on Europe
August to December 2008
To celebrate France’s European Union presidency, taking place from July to December 2008, the French Embassy in partnership with the French-American Chamber of Commerce, the French Institute Alliance Française and the French-American Fondation organize a high school contest opened to Tri-state high school students only. "Concours sur l'Europe" is an essay competition. Great prizes will be offered: one-week trips to France valued at 5 000€ and 2 000€! Street Art, Street Life
September 14, 2008 trough January 25, 2009

Organized by guest curator Lydia Yee, Street Art, Street Life examines the street as subject matter, venue, and source of inspiration for artists and photographers from the late 1950s to the present. This far ranging exhibition, one of the largest to consider the subject, includes street photography; documentation of performance, events, and artworks presented in the street; works using material from the street; and examples of street culture by more than thirty artists including French artits Sophie Calle and Jacques de la Villeglé. | more

46th New York Film Festival
September 26 through October 12, 2008
At the 46th New York Film Festival.France is represented in the festival’s main slate through four French films and eight international co-productions. Alongside the previously announced Opening Night film—Laurent Cantet’s The Class—French entries include Arnaud Desplechin’s star-studded family drama A Christmas Tale, Agnès Jaoui’s story of aspiring filmmakers following a rising female politician Let it Rain and Olivier Assayas’s moving introspection on time and mortality Summer Hours. Israeli director Ari Folman’s animated wartime autobiography Waltz with Bashir is one of several prominent French co-productions. more | website


French Cowboy and Papier Tigre
September 3, 4, 5 & 8

French Cowboy and Papier Tigre will play again together : the two bands gathered at Tucson in August for Some French Friends Festival and meet on the stage again for an amazing show. French Cowboy is the new band created by four members of the late Little Rabbits, one of the milestone french groups of the nineties, which was put to an end in 2005. Papier Tigre are a 3 piece rock band from Nantes, France. Their music is firmly entrenched in the tradition of inventive, challenging punk yet firmly rooted in the contemporary; rhythmically and vocally these songs recall the mutant, angular disco of Chinese Stars or Liars. | more

Martha Wainwright sings Edith Piaf
September 16 at 6pm
A rare, intimate evening with one of contemporary rock's most endearing artists. Interpreting the music and spirit of Piaf, Martha brings the house to its knees, proving the seemingly endless facets of this treasured folk-pop artist's many talents. | website

The Manhattan Sinfonietta presents Metropolis - Concert / Film
September 19

This will be the US premiere of Frenh-Argentinean composer Martin Matalon's score to Fritz Lang's classic film Metropolis, and will include the performance of 16 world-class instrumentalists under the baton of conductor and music director Jeffrey Milarsky, as well as live electronics and concurrent projection of the classic film. The composer will be present and will be giving an onstage talk at 7pm. | more

A Tuareg's Night @ Highline Ballroom
September 22

TIDAWT is a band from the Sahara (Niger) who has already tour in Africa, Europe & California. In 2006 they were invited to be a part of the project “Stones World” and recorded with the Rolling Stones band at Capitol Records Studio in Los Angeles. In 2007 they played with Mickey Hart of the Greatful Dead at Slim’s in San Francisco. Their first CD will be released in September 2008. more | website

Émilie Simon
September 24 to October 29, 2008
Émilie Simon (born 1978 in Montpellier, France) is a singer and composer of electronic music. Émilie Simon, the daughter of a sound engineer, grew up in Montpellier, France. She tried her hand at jazz and rock until finally turning herself towards electronic music. Simon is a multidisciplinary artist; writing, composing and singing in all of her albums. She is also familiar with recording equipment, often adding her personal touch into arrangements and production. She programs and edits the sound effects in most of her songs. more | website

Woman of Letters: Irène Némirovsky and Suite Française
September 24, 2008
The story of Irène Némirovsky is that of a remarkable writer who was driven to create, even as her world was being destroyed around her. Her life, work, and legacy are the subject of a new, extraordinary exhibition, Woman of Letters: Irène Némirovsky and Suite Française opening at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Woman of Letters is more than literary history: it is the story of a mother and her daughters, of memory and identity, of legacy and loss. A Russian-born Jewish writer, Némirovsky quickly became an acclaimed author in her adopted France, where she lived for many years. more | website

Phillipe Grimbert: Q&A and Book Signing
September 12

Author Philippe Grimbert will participate in a Q&A session and book signing after screenings of director Claude Miller’s A Secret, a film based on Grimbert’s award-winning novel, Memory. Novelist and essayist Philippe Grimbert was born in 1948 in Paris. He is a psychoanalyst, and lives in Paris. He is the author of several works of nonfiction: Psychanalyse de la chanson, Pas de fumée sans Freud and Chantons sous la psy. more | website


Andrée Putman, Beyond Style
From September 10 to October 10, 2008
Twenty-five years ago, Andrée Putman revolutionized the world of style. Her innovative design for Morgans, the world's first boutique hotel, ushered in a new approach to luxury: it became sleek, minimal, contemporary. For its 25th anniversary, Morgans
will pay homage to her original design, with its iconic black and white palette. On this occasion, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy will mark Putmans illustrious career with an unprecedented retrospective of her designs, including the new Voie Lactée grand piano, which will make its first appearance in America. Andrée Putman Beyond Style will go beyond being a mere exhibit. It will be another celebration of French-American cultural exchanges, specifically of Ms. Putmans strong transatlantic ties. more | website


Noelle Eiferman
From September 9 to September 27, 2008

Noelle Eiferman was born in Paris. She studied drawing and painting techniques nearby at the atelier of Genevieve Salomon at the Ecole des Beaux Arts of Chatou Croissy. At that time, her main works included oil paintings (portraits and nudes) and different types of drawings: pencil, red pencil, chalk, and charcoal. Her subjects included still life, figurative art, and landscapes. It helped shape her style, which even in its early stages was showing signs of abstraction, in both overall structure and detail. She played with colors, shapes and canvas size. | website

La Maison Française of New York University - Fall Season
September 8 to September 26
Through its rich and varied program in the areas of French culture and civilization, La Maison Française has played a major role in the flow of intellectual currents and ideas between France and the United States. The program of activities of La Maison Française covers a broad spectrum of subjects and opinion and includes lectures, symposia, film and video screenings, concerts, theater productions. Especially, the Simone de Beauvoir week (September 15 -20) offers theatrical productions, movies and conferences about this famous French writer who made a true revolution in attitudes. calendar | more | website


Talks with... Paul Auster and Céline Curiol
Tuesday, September 9 at 7pm
Acclaimed novelist Paul Auster will introduce the French writer Céline Curiol and her debut novel, Voice Over, to the New York public in an intimate dialogue between the two authors. Voice Over has already been translated into fourteen languages. Curiol's first novel describes a disaffected young woman who works at the Gare du Nord. Everyday she is surrounded by people yet separate from them, desperately seeking a connection. A book signing will follow the discussion.
Talks with... Bernard-Henri Lévy and Charlie Rose

Bernard-Henri Lévy, kicks-off the American tour for his forthcoming book Left in Dark Times, with an intimate luncheon discussion hosted by esteemed journalist Charlie Rose. Americans tend to believe that French anti-Americanism has become an integral part of French culture and society, while both countries wonder how the upcoming U.S. presidential election will impact French-American relations. more | website



New York Public Librairy - September Events

Robert Badinter, the French Minister of Justice between 1981 and 1986, led the battle to abolish the death penalty in France. Badinter's book, Abolition: One Man's Battle Against the Death Penalty, serves as a guidebook on the various legal and political strategies that can be used in the quest for abolition. With U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Badinter recently co-authored a book on the role of judges. | more
