From
May 8 to July 10, and with the support of CulturesFrance,
the Joyce Theater, the Dance Theater Workshop, and the
Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will present some of
France’s leading choreographers—Maguy Marin,
Angelin Preljocaj, Dominique Boivin, Thierry Malandain
(of the Ballet Biarritz), Heddy Maalem, and Rachid Ouramdane.
These six troupes, with their very varied styles, will
demonstrate the dynamism of France’s contemporary
dance scene, known worldwide for its excellence and
creativity and considered by many critics the world’s
best and most exciting. As if to emphasize this point,
a disconcerting dance performance will probably be held
in parks throughout the city in July! website

| Fort
Ticonderoga,
250th Anniversary of the Battle of Carillon
June
27 - July 8
In
July 1758, British General Abercromby led an army of 16,000 British
and Colonial troops against a small French force of 3200 entrenched
at Fort Carillon. On July 8 the forces were engaged on the heights
just north of the Fort after Montcalm's forces had hastily thrown
up earthwork fortifications. The Battle of Carillon lasted several
hours during which time Abercromby lost over 1900 men, a third of
whom were members of the 42nd Regiment of Foot, also known as the
Highlanders, or the "Black Watch" Regiment. Despite being
outnumbered 4 to 1, the French forces prevailed. In honor of this
victory, the French erected a cross on the Battle site. 2008 is
going to be the 250th Anniversary of this battle, which will be
commemorated by reenactors in historic clothing, troop formations
and inspections, ceremonies, battle reenactments. | website |

: Homage to Yves Montand
June
3,10, 17 & 24 - July 1, 8, 15 & 22
Though
born in Italy, Yves Montand will forever be a French icon—in
fact, The New York Times memorialized him as “the quintessential
French romantic, half-adventurer, half-intellectual.”
A true master of the arts, he began his career as a singer,
epitomizing Paris in dancehall songs with Édith Piaf.
As an actor, he worked with the greatest directors of his
age: Henri-Georges Clouzot, Costa-Gavras, and Alain Corneau.
FIAF celebrates the career and life of Montand through a selection
of works that show his diversity as an actor and his continuing
appeal as a movie star for more than forty years

Fete de
la musique Make Music New York!
The Second Annual MMNY is coming on
June 21st !
Make Music New York
is a new live, free musical celebration across the city that took place
for the first time on June 21, 2007. On that day, public space throughout
the five boroughs – sidewalks, parks, community gardens, and more
– became impromptu musical stages and dance floors, and social
meeting points. Thousands of amateur musicians, in every genre, played
on the sidewalks for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional
musicians performed for new audiences, who came out from under their
headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone was invited
to sing along and enjoy the first day of summer.more
