From May 8 to July 10, and with the support of CulturesFrance, the Joyce Theater, the Dance Theater Workshop, and the Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will present some of France’s leading choreographers—Maguy Marin, Angelin Preljocaj, Dominique Boivin, Thierry Malandain (of the Ballet Biarritz), Heddy Maalem, and Rachid Ouramdane. These six troupes, with their very varied styles, will demonstrate the dynamism of France’s contemporary dance scene, known worldwide for its excellence and creativity and considered by many critics the world’s best and most exciting. As if to emphasize this point, a disconcerting dance performance will probably be held in parks throughout the city in July! website

Rioult Danse-New York season
June 3- June7
Rioult will present a world premiere work, along with two acclaimed repertory pieces during its 2008 New York season, June 3 – 7, at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. The new piece has been commissioned by the Harriet and Gordon Greenfield Foundation, and is set to Bach’s Art of Fugue. The company will also present Prelude to Night (2000) and Bolero (2002). The Ballet Biarritz at Joyce Theater
June 24 - June 28, 2008
To celebrate its 25th birthday, the Joyce Theater New York has invited the Ballet Biarritz Thierry Malandain, who will perform two plays, "Le portrait de l'Infante" and "L'amour Sorcier". It is the third time that Ballet Biarritz showz its work at Joyce Theater. The two ballet pieces are both coregraphied by Thierry Malandain, have been created in France in March, 2008, and have already been shown across Europe. Malandain is one of the most important neo-classical choregrapher in France. The staging of « Le Portrait de l’Infante » has large sculptures by the artist Manolo Valdès who is based in New-York. The composition is by Maurice Ravel and for « L’Amour Sorcier » by Manuel de Falla.more | website


 

Fort Ticonderoga,
250th Anniversary of the Battle of Carillon
June 27 - July 8
In July 1758, British General Abercromby led an army of 16,000 British and Colonial troops against a small French force of 3200 entrenched at Fort Carillon. On July 8 the forces were engaged on the heights just north of the Fort after Montcalm's forces had hastily thrown up earthwork fortifications. The Battle of Carillon lasted several hours during which time Abercromby lost over 1900 men, a third of whom were members of the 42nd Regiment of Foot, also known as the Highlanders, or the "Black Watch" Regiment. Despite being outnumbered 4 to 1, the French forces prevailed. In honor of this victory, the French erected a cross on the Battle site. 2008 is going to be the 250th Anniversary of this battle, which will be commemorated by reenactors in historic clothing, troop formations and inspections, ceremonies, battle reenactments. | website


Palme d' Or
The Cannes film festival has awarded its top prize to a French classroom drama with a cast of amateurs in a banner year for movies with a conscience. In a popular choice, the jury led by US actor-director Sean Penn gave the festival’s coveted Palme d’Or to "The Class", featuring a multicultural cast of first-time teenage actors all plucked from the same Parisian secondary school.website

DIRECTORS’ FORTNIGHT AT 40,
June 13–July 3
The Directors’ Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) emerged in 1969 as an answer to the Cannes Film Festival after its 1968 shutdown due to protests spreading across France. The non-competitive festival takes place simultaneously in Cannes and focuses on new discoveries and directors who are on the cutting edge. Directors’ Fortnight has been proud to present the French premieres of debut films by Werner Herzog, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Nagisa Oshima, Martin Scorsese, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Lee, and many others. New York, May 7, 2008—What could be better than lounging lazily in a park on a lovely summer evening? Watching a film while lounging lazily in a park on a lovely summer evening! The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation have joined forces to show recent, critically-acclaimed French movies in the East Village’s parks in June (from May 30 to June 27). None of the movies have been widely distributed in the U.S., and this will be the New York premiere for two of them (Quand tu descendras du Ciel and Zim and Co). The sub-titled screenings will take place every Friday at sunset (around 8.30pm), and will be free of charge. Some of them will be followed by Q&As with the director (see the program below for details).more

Though born in Italy, Yves Montand will forever be a French icon—in fact, The New York Times memorialized him as “the quintessential French romantic, half-adventurer, half-intellectual.” A true master of the arts, he began his career as a singer, epitomizing Paris in dancehall songs with Édith Piaf. As an actor, he worked with the greatest directors of his age: Henri-Georges Clouzot, Costa-Gavras, and Alain Corneau. Fete de la musique Make Music New York!
The Second Annual MMNY is coming on June 21st !

Make Music New York is a new live, free musical celebration across the city that took place for the first time on June 21, 2007. On that day, public space throughout the five boroughs – sidewalks, parks, community gardens, and more – became impromptu musical stages and dance floors, and social meeting points. Thousands of amateur musicians, in every genre, played on the sidewalks for the biggest crowds of their lives. Professional musicians performed for new audiences, who came out from under their headphones to hear unfamiliar groups risk-free. And everyone was invited to sing along and enjoy the first day of summer.more | website


The New York Philarmonic Free-Concerts in the parks and Open Rehearsals

Like every years, the New York Philarmonic is giving free concerts in the city's parks.The first performance will take place on June, 24, at Central Park, Great Lawn, with Shostakovitch, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Sousa. 6th edition of the Journee du livre et de la lecture

EU WOMEN US

French artist Philippe Gronon’s gelatin silver prints of wall safes, library card catalogues and elevator doors are taken with a studio camera and enlarged to scale. Interested in how everyday objects inform collective or individual memory, the artist creates life-sized images that are hyper-descriptive of reality and yet also conceptual.

This year, the French Summer Camp will take place from July 7th to 26th. Geared for French-speaking teenagers aged 13-19, the Summer Camp is organized by the French Heritage Language Program in partnership with the French Embassy and the French-speaking communities of New York. Seeking Partnering Middle School French Class for Paris/New York Exchange

The Gustave Flaubert College in Paris is hoping to organize an 8-10 days exchange between a class of
French middle school students learning English and a group of New York City students learning French. They would like to bring 20 to 30 students to New York, either at the beginning of February or the end of March 2009. Ideally, they would like to partner with a middle school French class, who could host the students during their stay, and reciprocate. The New York students could come to Paris at some point in the spring. Our school is located in downtown Paris, in the Southern part of the city (13th arrondissement).
