Conference in English hosted by Professor Anne Kern “The state of contemporary French Cinema”

Anne Kern, Ph.D. from Yale has a dual degree in Comparative Literature and Film Studies. The profile of what we think of as French cinema has undergone considerable change from the turbulent post-1968 period to the present. This talk will focus on major developments in contemporary French cinema from the vantage points of aesthetics, industry, and culture, with particular emphasis on the past fifteen years. The role of government subsidies, large European co-productions, and shifts in cultural attention from high art auteurs (individual authors) to the banlieue (the suburbs) will be addressed, all contributing factors to the incredible richness and variety we see today in France's septième art (seventh art).
